Astrology & the Days of the Week

How Planetary Energy Influences Each Day

Have you ever noticed how the week tends to carry a certain sort of routine energy with it. We sort of move through it on autopilot in a way… we know what to expect on a Monday when it might feel a bit heavier after the weekend. Or a Friday when it feels a bit lighter and more pleasurable. We all know that Sundays carry that strange mix of rest and also the anticipation of the week ahead… the Sunday scaries are very real.

We move through the week - planning, pushing, playing and then recovering - without really questioning why it is that the week tends to feel the way it does. Or, we associate it to the general work week and how our society operates (because that’s what we’ve known). But here’s the thing…

The structure of the seven-day week isn’t actually random and it wasn’t created the way it is just because. It’s actually rooted in astrology - specifically the seven traditional planets - and each day carries a distinct energetic tone that syncs up to the day. If you look at other languages (which I’ll share below) you’ll see how the names of the week line up with the cosmos. And that’s energy we can work with if we choose to.

I’ve been adjusting my week to the schedule of the stars for the last year or two. And yes, while I can make my own schedule because I work for myself, there are also plenty of ways to embrace the energy when someone else dictates your schedule, too.

So what exactly does that look like? Let’s get into it!

Monday - Moon Day

Monday is ruled by the Moon, which governs the inner world of our feelings, needs, memory, and instinct. So themes of care, reflection, emotions and intuition are prominent here.

You can see the connection in the names for Monday: Lunes (Spanish), Lundi (French), and Lunedì (Italian) all come from Luna, the Moon.

This is why Mondays often feel tender, foggy, or emotionally loaded. Maybe we rested over the weekend, or maybe we need rest from the weekend. The Moon is about processing, not charging ahead.

Monday works best when you’re able to:

  • Ease into the week (maybe bump Monday meetings to afternoons if you can)

  • Check in with how you’re actually feeling

  • Set intentions rather than outcomes

  • Handle behind-the-scenes or reflective work

Think planning, journaling, gentle organization, or tending to emotional loose ends. When you honor Monday’s lunar nature, the rest of the week often flows more smoothly because you’ve given yourself a chance to check in first.

Tuesday - Mars Day

Tuesday belongs to Mars, the planet of drive, motivation, and forward motion. So naturally this day brings up themes of action, momentum, and effort.

Tuesday’s connection to Mars is visible in its names: Martes (Spanish), Mardi (French), and Martedì (Italian) all come from Mars/Marte.

This is where energy naturally wants to go somewhere. It’s a supportive day for:

  • Tackling harder tasks

  • Making decisive moves

  • Starting things you’ve been putting off

  • Physical movement or focused effort

If Monday is about feeling your way in, Tuesday is about doing. Mars needs direction and then it takes action.

Wednesday - Mercury Day

Wednesday is ruled by Mercury, the messenger, so naturally themes of communication, connection, thinking and learning come together here.

Wednesday’s link to Mercury shows up in the names: Miércoles (Spanish), Mercredi (French), and Mercoledì (Italian) all come from Mercurio/Mercure.

This is the mental midpoint of the week and ideal for:

  • Writing, teaching, or studying

  • Meetings and conversations

  • Planning, brainstorming, and organizing information

  • Emails, content creation, or sharing ideas

If your thoughts feel clearer midweek, that’s not accidental. Mercury thrives on the exchange of ideas moving from mind to mind.

Thursday - Jupiter Day

Thursday carries Jupiter’s influence which is the planet of wisdom, optimism, and long-term vision. This is a day that comes with themes of growth, expansion, meaning and perspective.

Thursday carries Jupiter’s energy even in language: Jueves (Spanish), Jeudi (French), and Giovedì (Italian, from Giove) all trace back to Jupiter.

This is a beautiful day to:

  • Zoom out and look at the bigger picture

  • Work on goals, strategy, or future planning (this is where “big ideas” live)

  • Say yes to opportunities (especially if they’re connected to sales, product launches or areas where you want to see expansion/abundance come into play)

  • Learn something that stretches you (a great day for taking a class, signing up for that webinar, etc.)

Jupiter reminds us that details matter because they form the bigger picture, and that bigger picture is often what motivates us.

Friday - Venus Day

Friday is ruled by Venus, and the energy tends to be instantly recognizable. The day when themes of pleasure, beauty, connection and harmony come into play. That Friday feeling when you close your laptop or walk out of the doors at work… even if you have to work Saturday, Friday just feels more like a “whew, let’s go enjoy ourselves somehow”.

Friday’s association with Venus is clear in the names: Viernes (Spanish), Vendredi (French), and Venerdì (Italian, from Venere).

This is the day where ease returns. Venus invites us to soften, enjoy, and appreciate.

Friday supports:

  • Creative work

  • Relationship-building (social lives typically pick up here)

  • Aesthetic tasks (design, styling, beautifying)

  • Wrapping things up in a way that feels satisfying

Venus asks: How can this feel a little better? How can things look a little better?

Saturday - Saturn Day

Saturday belongs to Saturn, which is often a bit misunderstood, but has some incredible wisdom for us and is deeply important. Themes of structure, discipline, responsibility and boundaries come up here. Ever noticed how Saturday feels like the weekend day to “get the errands/tasks/chores done”? Or it’s the day of the weekend “to-dos”.

Saturday’s link to Saturn appears in the names: Sábado (Spanish), Samedi (French, from Saturne), and Sabato (Italian) all reference Saturn.

Saturn governs:

  • Commitments

  • Long-term work

  • Maintenance and responsibility

  • Boundaries and realism

This can look like chores, systems, finances, or tending to what needs consistency. Saturn isn’t about punishment or discipline in a negative way, it’s about sustainability and success. It wants to help us get things done so that we can embrace the rest of the energy the rest of the week.

Sunday - Sun Day

Sunday is ruled by the Sun - the center of the solar system and a symbol of life force. This association is probably the most obvious of the days. Themes here are going to be connected to vitality, identity, purpose and renewal.

Sunday’s solar connection shows in the names, though shifted by Christian influence: Domingo (Spanish), Dimanche (French), and Domenica (Italian) all originally reference Dominus, but the day still carries Sun-like energy. Originally, this day was “dies solis” which means “day of the sun” but as Christianization swept through Rome, it was changed to honor the “son” instead of the “sun”, thereby adapting the concept of “the Lord’s day”.

Even so, Sunday energetically still carries solar themes of rest, renewal, joy, and reconnection with self.

This is a day for:

  • True rest (the kind that restores you)

  • Play, creativity, and joy

  • Remembering why you do what you do

Sunday helps to set the tone for the week ahead. When you honor your energy here, when rest and play are given, Monday doesn’t feel quite so heavy.

Other practical ways to embrace the energy:

Now, if you’re wanting to adopt some of this into your own week keep in mind that you do not need to do all of this at once. You don’t need to overhaul your entire schedule. As with most things connected to energy, there are no hard rules or rigid guidelines you must follow. This can be a tool in a way that works best for you and your reality. We all have different responsibilities and needs and capacities… don’t let this be another “I have to do this” that gets added to the list.

Here are a couple very simple starting points you could try:

Pick one day: Think of your own schedule and think about a day where you’d like to try to embrace more of the energy - and then try it. Set the intention for the day (or part of the day!) with that in mind.

Wear an associated color: This might be my favorite thing to do… or at least one of the easiest… because each planet is also associated with a color(s). If you want to embrace the energy of the day and the tasks/schedule doesn’t quite allow it, wear something of the associated color for a little energetic reminder.

Monday - Moon - white, cream, silver

Tuesday - Mars - red, orange, coral (warm colors)

Wednesday - Mercury - green

Thursday - Jupiter - yellow, gold

Friday - Venus - pink, light purple, light blue

Saturday - Saturn - dark blue, black

Sunday - The Sun - orange, red, gold

Now, for those who are invested in “wearing the right colors for their skintone” or who feel like some of these colors are not in their normal rotation, get creative. It doesn’t need to be a main garment… maybe it’s a piece of jewelry or a hair accessory, maybe it’s a pair of socks or underwear. You’re the only person who has to know what the color is connected to.

This Is About Pattern

You don’t have to believe in astrology for this to be useful.

Language preserves patterns long after we forget why they exist. The planets are still embedded in how we name our days because humans have always observed rhythm, repetition, and energy.

Working with the week this way isn’t about superstition. It’s about remembering that time has texture to it and that life feels more supportive when we stop pushing so hard against its natural flow. We live in a modern society, yes, but humans are a part of nature first and foremost.

So, start by noticing your own energy on these days… then adjust gently. As always, let your week meet you where you are and find ways to make it work for your own unique rhythm. Have fun with it!
