Leo Season
Embracing the warmth, pride, and creative courage of Leo season.
I have a big blue couch in my living room that looks out onto my front yard. This blue, velvet couch that was my first “adult” furniture purchase and one that felt a bit brave. It was a statement piece… and that wasn’t something I was used to. But now, years later, it’s still one of my favorite pieces of furniture in the house (as well as my pup’s) and every time I sit on it I think to myself “this was a bit bold, but I’m so happy I did it”.
I’m sitting on that couch as I write this, under the sunny skies of July looking out onto my front garden that is loaded with color. Similar to the couch, turning my entire front yard from lawn into a garden of flowers felt like a risky move. I knew I wanted more garden but I’d be lying if I also didn’t stuck on some of the familiar thought loops of “what will the neighbors think?” and “what if it doesn’t look good?”. But I did it anyway, because in my heart it’s what I wanted. And now, the beauty and creativity that comes from a yard full of blooms, and the absolute awe I find myself in every time I set foot in it, fill me with such genuine joy I’m not sure how I didn’t do it sooner. I’ve created a magical little wonderland in the middle of the city, full of life buzzing and flowers swaying.
That is the energy of Leo season.
It’s being a little bold, leading from your heart, following your joy just because, letting the act of creating be enough. It’s the season that encourages us to shine for no other reason that we were born to. To celebrate ourselves and give ourselves attention, because it is our “self” from which all other parts of this life are created.

When is Leo Season?
Leo season generally runs from July 22/23 through August 22/23, picking up right where Cancer leaves off. The exact start and end shift slightly depending on the year.
The Story & Symbolism of Leo
Leo is symbolized by the lion – and if there was a trait that most people think of first it’s probably the mane and the sheer presence of these magnificently regal cats. A lion doesn't have to do anything to be looked at… it simply is. But there's more going on underneath all of that. Did you know that a lion rests up to twenty hours a day? It conserves its energy carefully so that when it does move, it moves with total commitment. There's nothing halfway about a lion… it doesn’t know “meh”.
The performance isn't vanity; it's the visible edge of something that's actually quite steady underneath. The rest isn't laziness; it's how the strength gets stored up for when it's needed. And the fact that a lion is hard to ignore? That's not attention-seeking – frankly, that's just what it looks like when something stops apologizing for taking up space (a reminder perhaps many of us could benefit from).
There's also the pride to consider… literally. Lionesses do most of the hunting, but the lion's presence is what holds the group together. He has to be steady enough for everyone else to organize around but he doesn’t have to doesn't have to direct every move. But let’s talk about pride for a minute.
A group of lions is called a pride, yes, and pride is also the feeling Leo is most associated with (even thought its sometimes unfairly, like it's a flaw to be managed). But the word holds both meanings for a reason. Pride, at its healthiest, isn't arrogance or ego, but the quiet certainty of knowing where you belong and what you're worth, the same steadiness that lets a pride of lions function as one unit without anyone needing to prove anything. Leo isn't asking you to be prideful in the boastful sense. It's asking you to have pride in the original sense… as an honest, comfortable regard for yourself that doesn't need defending.
In Greek mythology, Leo is linked to the Nemean Lion, a beast with a hide no blade or arrow could pierce. Killing it was the first of Heracles' twelve labors, and he eventually succeeded not by cutting the lion but by wrestling it, bare-handed, until it was overcome. Afterward he wore its impenetrable skin as his own armor for the rest of his labors.
Zeus was so struck by the lion's strength that he placed it among the stars as the constellation Leo, so it could be honored forever rather than only remembered as a monster to be defeated. In Latin, the word "lion" is Leo (leonis).
Leo often gets flattened into "the dramatic one" or "the one who needs the spotlight", but that’s why the story can be so helpful to think about. Because there’s another, perhaps quieter, truth in the myth: this is a hide nothing could get through and was still worn afterward as protection. Leo energy is not performance for its own sake. It's a wholehearted, undefended way of showing up – and once you've shown up like that, it becomes part of your armor, not just your act.
The soul of Leo is this: a generosity of spirit, a willingness to be fully seen, and a warmth that… when it's healthy… has enough left over to light up the people standing near it too.

Themes & Associations of Leo
Ruled by the Sun
Leo is the only sign ruled by the Sun, which makes it quite special in its own right. Where other signs are ruled by planets that move quickly through the sky or swing between phases, the Sun holds one steady position and everything else orbits around it. It doesn't hide, it doesn't wax or wane, it doesn't disappear for a season (even thought it might feel like that in the depths of winter). It shows up, every day, the same way. We can count on it to rise and set over the course of its 24 hours. Our earth steadily moves around it… while it burns bright.
This makes Leo energy inherently central rather than cyclical. You might notice a pull this month toward being seen, toward taking up your rightful space, toward being the one who initiates the plan instead of waiting to be invited into someone else's. That's solar energy.
Under the Sun's influence, this season draws our attention toward identity, vitality, and the simple fact of being alive and warm and here. The Sun is associated with the self as it actually is – not the self performing for others or the ego in a conceited way, but the self at its most essential and undiminished. This is a season for asking what makes you feel most like you, and then doing more of exactly that, without shrinking it down to make it more comfortable for anyone else.
This is also why Leo season has a natural pull toward leadership. It’s not leadership in the way of titles, but the kind that comes from simply being willing to go first. Taking initiative, making the call, being the one who says "let's do it this way" instead of waiting for someone else to decide. Solar confidence isn't about being right or in charge of everyone... it's about trusting your own steady light enough to lead from it.
The Fifth House
Leo naturally rules the fifth house, which governs creativity, pleasure, romance, children (or childlike behavior) and play. It’s the part of life that isn't strictly necessary, but makes everything else a bit more enjoyable and worth doing.
The 5th house is about things like:
your creative expression – the things you make simply because you want to make them
joy and play… and the parts of life that don't need to be justified or monetized
romance, flirtation, and the electricity of being drawn to someone or something
children (literal or otherwise) and what it means to create and delight in something with childlike energy
performance, self-expression, and the willingness to be witnessed
This house is the part of the chart that says life is allowed to be fun (… anyone else need to hear this often?). When the fifth house is tended to and cared for, the rest of life gets a little lighter because there's somewhere for delight to actually go.
Leo season helps us to pay attention to pleasure. So what have you been creating just because you love it? When did you last do something purely because it was fun, with no other agenda attached? Where in your life is there room for more play, more romance, more color? All helpful questions to think about… and then courageously take action on.
Element & Modality: Fixed Fire
Leo is the fixed fire sign. I like to think of it as the flame that's already caught and is now holding steady.
Fire is the element of will, vitality, passion, and self-expression. But fixed fire isn't a spark or a wandering flame – it's the hearth fire, the one that's been tended long enough to hold. The logs that are glowing amongst the flames ready to take on more fuel. Fixed energy sustains and deepens with staying power. When Leo season arrives, we’re in the height of summer when the heat isn't building anymore, it's just here, day after day, steady and full.
The other fire signs feel a bit different. Aries is cardinal fire – the match strike, the first spark, the initiating charge that gets things moving. Sagittarius is mutable fire – the flame that travels, that roams from place to place and idea to idea, restless and searching. Leo is the fire that's found its place and is committed to burning there, brightly, for as long as it's fed.
This is also why Leo season can feel both warm and a little intense at the same time. It's not the frantic new energy of spring, and it's not the wandering curiosity of a mutable sign. It's steady, radiant, present – the fire that doesn't need to prove it's burning because you can simply feel the heat coming off it.
The other fixed signs – Taurus, Scorpio, Aquarius – share this staying quality. In Leo, that fixedness shows up as loyalty, as creative devotion, and as a heart that, once given, tends to stay given.

Leo in the Natural World
Leo season lands at the peak of summer's heat, when the garden has shifted from growing to giving. The lush green stem-and-leaf work of Cancer season is starting to turn into something else entirely – fruit. Tomatoes coloring on the vine, corn tasseling out, the first real harvest starting to come in. This is ripening season, the moment when all that earlier growth finally shows what it was for.
In the natural world, Leo is associated with the fruit and the flower at their fullest expression – not the root, not the leaf, but the showy, colorful, unmistakable part of the plant that says “hey, look at me, I'm ready!”. Sunflowers are the obvious Leo flower, turning their whole faces toward the sun all day, unashamed about what they're following. Zinnias and other heat-loving blooms are hitting their stride too, loud and saturated in color, clearly not trying to blend in.
The heat is Leo's medium the way water was Cancer's. Long, golden evenings. The particular gold light of late afternoon in early August. A pull toward being outside even when it's hot, toward gathering people around a table or a bonfire, toward staying up later because the warmth makes you want to linger… and because you know that the days are slowly losing their light. There's a reason August feels like the season for reunions, parties, and celebrations… the Sun is asking us to actually enjoy the fullness of our lives.
That's the invitation of Leo's natural season: bright, warm, ripe, and unwilling to hide. Not the tender new growth of June, not the winding-down of September. Just the generous, radiant peak of summer doing its most visible, creative, joyful and courageous work.
How Leo Season Might Show Up For You
You might feel more visible than usual, even in small ways. A desire to wear the bolder color, to speak up in the meeting, to post the thing you'd normally talk yourself out of sharing. All of that is fair because this is the season. Leo doesn't want you to perform for approval, but it does want you to stop dimming yourself down to keep things comfortable for other people. That can sometimes take a bit of courage, but Leo reminds us that when we lead from our heart our courage is rewarded.
You might find yourself craving more joy and less obligation or wanting to do the fun thing instead of the responsible thing… at least sometimes. Perhaps you notice which parts of your life feel like duty and which parts feel like delight, and the gap between them becomes harder to ignore. This is Leo doing its work, and it's not a call to blow up your responsibilities (as much as we might want to), but it's an invitation to notice where play has gone missing.
You may also notice a pull toward romance, creativity, or anything that lets you make something purely because you want to. Painting, dressing up, flirting, starting the project with no practical use. You may find yourself wanting to be the host, to throw the party, to gather people around something that feels warm and generous and yours. That's a Leo impulse worth honoring.
For some, this season also brings up questions about being seen… where you've held back, where you've made yourself smaller to keep the peace, where you've confused humility with invisibility. Leo rules self-expression, and the fifth house asks whether you're actually letting yourself shine and be witnessed. If something in you has been waiting for permission to take up more space, this is a season that supports actually taking it.
You might also notice this show up at work or in group settings… a pull to speak up in the meeting instead of staying quiet, to volunteer for the thing instead of waiting to be asked, to trust your read on a situation enough to act on it. You don’t need to be the loudest person in the room, but it is about noticing when you've been holding back a decision or an opinion out of habit, not because you actually doubt it.
And if you've spent a long time being useful, practical, and low-maintenance for everyone else, Leo season will ask you to let some of that attention come back to you. It's not selfish to want to be celebrated. It's not too much to want to be seen clearly and loved for exactly what you are. And it's worth admitting that this can feel surprisingly vulnerable and a bit uncomfortable if it’s not the usual method of operations… wanting to be seen is a risk every time, no matter how many times you've done it before. But you can acknowledge that and still show up for yourself… because you have a special light to shine.
Simple Ways to Embrace Leo Energy
As always, these are invitations and ideas – not a to-do list and not exhaustive by any means. Just a few ideas to get you going, but only take what resonates.
Make something purely for the joy of it. No audience required, no productivity angle needed. A painting, a playlist, a garden bed planted just because the colors made you happy. Let the making and creativity be the whole point.
Celebrate something. Cancer's season wanted a home-cooked meal; Leo wants the table decorated, the good playlist on, the toast actually given out loud. Mark an occasion – any occasion – with a little more ceremony than it requires… have some fun with it.
Wear the color. Say the bold thing. Take up the space. This isn't about being loud for its own sake, it's about letting your actual self be visible instead of the toned-down version to “fit in” or make everyone else comfortable.
Let yourself be delighted by something. Not useful, not efficient… just delightful. A flower you grew, a song, a person who makes you laugh until you can't breathe. Leo season is not a season for justifying your joy… it’s about living into it.
Make the call. Volunteer to lead the thing, plan the trip, or pitch the idea. Practice trusting your first instinct instead of waiting to see what everyone else thinks first.
Ask yourself where you've been hiding. This doesn’t need to be heavy, just honest. Where have you shrunk to keep others comfortable? What would it look like to let that part of you back out, even in a small, low-stakes way this week? What part of you wants to shine?
A Note from Leo Season
Leo season reminds us that being fully, visibly yourself is not vanity and it's certainly not something to apologize for. It's the warmth that everything else gets to grow near. The willingness to create and be creative without any sort of justification or outcome, to celebrate without waiting for permission or an invitation to do so, to be seen without shrinking or hiding… because you’re meant to shine. None of these are indulgences and they're certainly not always easy… but they're the things that make a life feel like we’re truly living instead of just managing.
The height of summer's light is asking you to notice what you've been holding back, who you've been dimming yourself for, and whether the version of you that shows up in the world matches the one that's actually burning underneath.
You're allowed to want to be seen. You're allowed to take up space. You're allowed to make things just because they bring you joy.
