Scorpio Season

Depth, Transformation, and the Power Beneath the Surface.

There's a reason Scorpio season feels witchy. While Samhain and Halloween sitting right in the middle of it certainly helps, it's more about the season itself: the veil feels thinner, the dark comes on fast and early, and the whole world outside seems to be leaning into mystery rather than away from it. Bare trees look like something out of a folk tale. Fog sits low in the mornings. Even the quiet feels like it's holding something. Everything feels a bit more unfamiliar... a bit more unknown.

Scorpio is the sign built for exactly this kind of season because it's not afraid of the dark, the unknown, or the things most people would rather not look at directly. If anything, it's drawn to them. It wants to know what's buried and what's in the depths. It wants to investigate and to uncover what transforms in secret before it ever shows itself in the light.

So let's venture into the darkness and see what this season has to teach us.

When Is Scorpio Season?

Scorpio is the eighth sign of the zodiac, and its season generally runs from October 23 through November 21, depending on the year.

The Story & Symbolism of Scorpio

Scorpio is represented by the Scorpion, tied to the myth of Orion, the hunter who boasted he could kill any creature alive. The gods sent a scorpion to humble him, and it succeeded where his strength couldn't, not through size, but by striking precisely and from where he'd least expect it. Both hunter and scorpion were placed in the sky afterward, on opposite sides, which is why Orion sets as Scorpio rises.

Some traditions also link Scorpio to the phoenix, a version of the same sign further along its own story: no longer just the sting, but the rebirth that follows it.

It's a myth about power that doesn't come from force, and change that only comes after something is destroyed first - a fitting mirror for Scorpio energy.

Themes & Associations of Scorpio

Ruled by Pluto (traditionally Mars)

Pluto, planet of the underworld, transformation, and what's buried, gives Scorpio its pull toward depth and its comfort with what other signs avoid. Traditionally ruled by Mars as well, Scorpio carries a quieter, more strategic version of that planet's drive. It's the energy that says: nothing real gets built without going through the dark part first.

The Eighth House

Scorpio is the natural ruler of the 8th house - the realm of:

  • intimacy and merging with another person

  • death, endings, and what comes after

  • shared resources, debt, and inheritance

  • power - who holds it, who gives it up

  • what's hidden, taboo, or unspoken

  • transformation and rebirth

It's the part of life we don't get to skip past if we actually want to be known.

Element & Modality: Fixed Water

As a fixed sign, Scorpio anchors us in the fall season (in the northern hemisphere). And as a water sign, it’s connected to our deeper emotional realms.

So as the only fixed water sign of the zodiac, Scorpio expresses water differently than Cancer or Pisces.

  • Cancer is the responsive tide, moving with feeling.

  • Pisces is the boundless current, dissolving into it.

  • Scorpio is the still, deep water - calm on top, with currents underneath strong enough to pull you under.

Scorpio Season in the Natural World

By the time Scorpio season begins, the growing season is unmistakably over. The last leaves are down, the ground is bare, and the light is dropping fast enough to notice week to week.

But nothing has actually died. Roots are still alive below the frost line, bulbs are quietly setting up next year's growth in the dark, and whatever's decomposing on the surface is becoming the soil something else will grow from. Scorpio season looks like an ending from the outside. From underneath, it's already becoming something else.

Simple Ways to Embrace Scorpio Energy

  • Have the honest conversation: Not the version that keeps things comfortable, the version that says what's actually true, even if it's harder to get out. Scorpio rewards depth over politeness.

  • Face an ending you've been resisting: Not because letting go is easy, but because staying attached to something already over is costing you more than admitting it's finished would.

  • Sit with a feeling instead of managing it: Jealousy, grief, desire, whatever's surfacing. Give it a few honest minutes before deciding what to do with it.

  • Notice where you're holding onto control: Ask yourself if it's coming from trust or from fear, and what it would feel like to loosen your grip on it, even slightly.

  • Go toward one uncomfortable truth: Not to punish yourself with it, just to actually see it clearly instead of managing around it.

Scorpio season is an invitation to look closely at what's beneath the surface, at what holds power over us, and at what's ready to transform even if we're not quite ready to release our grip on it. That can feel a little scary or unsettling, especially if it's unfamiliar territory. But we're not doing it in complete darkness. The sun is still moving through the sky this whole season, casting its own kind of light on exactly the places we might otherwise look away from. It's less about facing the dark alone and more about learning to befriend it, with a bit of light to guide the way.

Here's to the depths worth facing, and to the power that comes from finally looking at what's beneath the surface.

I’ll leave you with a quote that lives on my bathroom mirror as a reminder that venturing into the darkness often comes with reward.
